William Cobbett (1763-1835) Was an English “Radical” politician, journalist and social commentator revered by many “Chestertonians” as “the Apostle of Distributism,” what G.K. Chesterton defined as a policy of widely distributed small property, with a preference for family-owned farms and businesses.
This video is remarkable in that it uses Cobbett’s own words, against him, cleverly inserting Fabian socialist Welfare State principles into the commentary as if they were Cobbett’s own, and completely ignoring two of Cobbett’s near-obsessions: 1) widespread ownership of capital by as many people as possible, and 2) minimizing the State’s role by minimizing taxes and keeping it out of people’s personal lives . . . the exact opposite of the Fabian program.
We believe that what Cobbett was really in favor of was not cradle to grave security provided by what Dorothy Day pejoratively described as “Holy Mother, the State,” but something along the lines of the Economic Democracy Act:
